Play bingo with the /aɪ/ /eɪ/ /e/ /ɔ:/ /i:/ /æ/ and /ɪ/vowel sounds.
The link between the way we spell in English and pronunciation can be confusing. It’s important to understand that the way a word looks, might not be the way it’s pronounced. It’s also important to learn the individual sounds of English. In this exercise, you’ll learn some vowel sounds and complete an activity in which you’ll need to differentiate some minimal pairs.
Exercise 1:
- Listen to each recording to learn the sounds in this activity.
- Note that while/e/, /æ/ and /ɪ/ are short sounds, /i:/, /ɔ:/ /eɪ/and /aɪ/ are long sounds.
For more about these sound symbols, look at the page on the phonemic alphabet).
Exercise 2:
- Click to listen to the sound under the letter A and choose the sound you hear.
- If you need, you can listen again to the sounds in the yellow section of the slide before you select your answer.
- To move to the next slide click on the > right arrow at the bottom or click the little box with a circle in it at the bottom.
- To go back a slide, click on the < left arrow at the bottom or click the little box with a circle in it at the bottom.
Exercise 3:
