Cambridge Grammar for IELTS – Excellent resource.


Cambridge Grammar for IELTS is very useful, as grammar knowledge is important in all four modules of the test. Remember that your answers in the Reading and Listening test gap-fills must fit grammatically, so knowledge of grammar will help you select the right word from a list of options or modify a word hear in the listening recording to the correct grammatical form. Answers must not just be correct factually, but also grammatically. This is also a very useful resource for students who are completing EAP courses or degrees

202 Useful Exercises for IELTS – Excellent book.


202 Useful Exercises for IELTS is an excellent IELTS Preparation book. It has short skills exercises for all four skills assessed and there are two editions: International Edition and Australasian Edition. This is also a great book for Upper-Intermediate to Advanced students, especially EAP students.

Voice of America VOA Learning English – This is a great purpose-built resource with listening material divided into three levels. Some resources have subtitles and others have transcripts.

Randall’s ESL Cyber Listening Lab – This is a great resource. It’s divided into three levels and has pre and post-listening activities.

ESOL Courses Divided into levels and has lessons four all skills. Audio is delivered via YouTube, meaning that you can turn on subtitles and slow the video down.

Breaking News English – Listening and Reading lessons based on real news stories with activities and audio delivered at different speeds.

English Club Learn English Pronunciation This is an excellent resource with explanations of all the aspects of sound production and English pronunciation. Well worth a browse.

University of Iowa Pronunciation Resources

Sounds of Speech (University of Iowa) a great mobile app available from Google Play and Apple Store for a low price. This app is very useful for both learners and teachers. It has videos of individual sounds being mouthed as well as animations showing the vocal apparatus used to make each sound.

More pronunciation resources

The following pronunciation resources require Flash Player but as of 29/12/2020 still work with Internet Explorer *

Unfortunately, these resources require Flash Player, which has been blocked by most browsers (apparently due to security issues). However, you can still access these resources with the old Internet Explorer, but you should bear in mind that may be a small security risk in doing so.
