Interesting conversations about languages

Linguists are using Star Trek to save endangered languages.

Inverse.com

Nerdy title, but a very interesting article, not just about artificial nerd languages, but also about something far more interesting: real living languages. Linguists are using Star Trek to save endangered languages.

The language we use affects the way we think.

This is something most multilingual people have long known. Interesting article. The Conversation:
The power of language: we translate our thoughts into words, but words also affect the way we think

Best viewed in Chrome on a desktop or laptop computer. Mobile users, enable screen rotation in your settings to best view the activities.

Although I have increased line spacing, inter-letter spacing and inter-word spacing in CSS to maximise readability, you may still wish to adjust the way this site is displayed to you. To improve the readability of this site, I recommend the free Helperbird browser extension. Click here for more information. Unfortunately, I have no way to control text in activities created in third-party apps, so text in some of the activities is smaller. You may need to click CTRL + to zoom.

Introduction

Hi there! I hope you find something useful on this website. The purpose of this website is to provide tips and resources to help you with your general studies and your journey learning the English language (it’s mostly about learning English, but some of my strategies may help you learn another language). The website is still in the early days of development, so please bear with me as I create content and transfer content from my old website. Please click on a category in the red links above.

Screen readers can help people with disabilities…and everyone else.

Viewing this website on a mobile device.

Many people think that using screen readers to view websites is something only people with disabilities need to do. However, we can all benefit from this technology at times. For example, sometimes our eyes get tired due to looking at a screen for too long. In addition, the blue light from screens has been proven to cause sleeplessness in some individuals. While it is important to take regular breaks during the day and to disengage from technology a few hours before bedtime, using dark mode and larger, better spaced text in the Immersive Reader can also help greatly. This can help greatly as our eyesight gradually deteriorates with age.

To improve the readability of this site, we recommend using a free browser extension to display text in an easier to read form and/or read it aloud. I have found that the best performance is achieved by using several different apps. While the Immersive Reader in Edge and the Chrome extension version of the Immersive Reader can be very useful, they have some downsides, such as displaying bulleted lists as normal text. Speechify is more effective at reading bulleted lists aloud using the screenshot function. After testing a few different options, I would recommend the free Helperbird browser extension, which offers even more if a cheap annual subscription is paid. There is a Helperbird extension for Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox. Mac users can also install Edge and Chrome on Mac iOS and install the extension if they wish.
